Prada launches Indian-made Kolhapuri sandals after cultural appropriation backlash
Prada has introduced a limited-edition collection of sandals, drawing inspiration from the traditional Kolhapuri sandals of India, with a price tag of €750 ($881; £650). These sandals, crafted by skilled artisans from Maharashtra and Karnataka, have a history dating back to the 12th Century. In June 2024, Prada encountered criticism for showcasing similar styles at a Milan fashion event without proper acknowledgment of their heritage. The new collection is accessible in 40 locations globally and online, merging age-old craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics. Additionally, Prada revealed a three-year training initiative for 180 artisans across eight Indian districts, in collaboration with two design institutes. Kolhapuri sandals received Geographical Indication status in 2019 and typically retail for 500 to 1,000 rupees ($5.29–$10.58) in India.
