Powerhouse Parramatta: Sydney's largest cultural project since Opera House opens 2026
Parramatta Powerhouse, a 30,000-square-meter museum located in western Sydney, is anticipated to launch in 2026, marking Australia's most significant cultural infrastructure initiative since the Sydney Opera House. The design, created by the Franco-Japanese firm Moreau Kusunoki in partnership with Australian architects Genton, is nearing completion, with interior installations currently in progress. The facility will house seven exhibition areas, digital and learning studios, a cinema, a 900-seat theater, rooftop gardens, eateries, and thirty residential studios for artists, scientists, and researchers. The opening exhibition, 'Task Eternal,' curated with the architectural firm Open, led by Li Hu and Huang Wenjing, delves into aerospace and humanity's quest for flight, drawing inspiration from author Ted Chiang. Additionally, the Vitocco Family Kitchen will serve as a 200-seat demonstration area for culinary innovation, while the Lang Walker Family Academy will provide STEM education and lodging for 60 students. A 24-hour green public space will link the museum to the river, accommodating festivals for up to 10,000 attendees. The building is designed to operate at net-zero carbon, utilizing renewable energy and water systems, alongside zero-waste exhibition practices. Native eucalyptus and Ginkgo biloba trees, a nod to an 1893 gift from Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, will adorn the riverbank and terrace.
