Powerhouse Parramatta's steel exoskeleton nears completion in Sydney

architecture-design · 2026-05-01

Powerhouse Parramatta, a significant museum under development in Western Sydney, Australia, is being crafted by Moreau Kusunoki in collaboration with Genton, with an anticipated completion date in late 2026. The structure comprises two primary sections encased in a robust steel exoskeleton that not only provides support but also minimizes solar heat gain before it reaches the glass surfaces. Inside, expansive galleries feature polished concrete flooring, with light streaming through a lattice that creates dynamic lighting conditions. The facility will house artist and researcher studios, educational spaces linked to the Lang Walker Family Academy, and a kitchen for community food initiatives. A landscaped public area at ground level will connect to the river and remain open all day. The initiative targets net-zero emissions from the outset, incorporating water collection and energy systems. The exoskeleton’s visible connections enhance the perception of scale and thickness. Progress is documented through images by Rory Gardiner, Iwan Baan, Nic Walker, and Powerhouse Studio.
