Powerhouse Company Wins Competition for Amsterdam's VrijHaven Creative District

architecture-design · 2026-04-26

A consortium led by Powerhouse Company has won the competition to redesign Havenstraat, a former industrial area in Amsterdam, into a new creative district called VrijHaven. The project, developed with Studio Donna van Milligen Bielke & Ard de Vries Architecten, Team V Architecture, Joppe Kusters, and DELVA, features the Oerplint, a monumental plinth inspired by the site's railway history, housing flexible studios, affordable creative spaces, restaurants, and cultural venues. The Oerplint will connect to De Vrijplaats public square, designed for cultural programming, and a historic tram museum. Twelve residential blocks, designed by Powerhouse Company, Team V Architecture, and Joppe Kusters, will use recycled and bio-based materials, with flexible layouts and distinctive roofs. Green courtyards by DELVA will link the residential complex and the Oerplint. VrijHaven aims for energy efficiency with a smart grid to reduce costs and CO2 emissions, targeting high BENG scores. The district is developed by RED Company and Caransa Group in collaboration with the municipality of Amsterdam. Construction will preserve the area's existing character while creating a sustainable, informal city ideal.
