Postminimalist sculptor Jene Highstein dies at 70, early works exhibition planned at Clocktower

Jene Highstein, a postminimalist sculptor known for elegant and idiosyncratic works with architectural interests, died on April 27, 2013, at age 70 from lung cancer diagnosed in January. His death occurred at his farm in upstate New York. Highstein was associated with the alternative space 112 Greene Street during the 1970s and exhibited extensively across the United States, Europe, and Asia. His most recent exhibition featured drawings from Cape Breton at 56 Bogart in Bushwick during the winter preceding his death. In 2011, he presented towers and elliptical forms at Danese Gallery. An exhibition of his early works is now being organized at the Clocktower in Lower Manhattan. A tribute to the artist will be posted later in the week.
