Posthumous Etel Adnan Exhibition at White Cube Features Tapestries Based on 1960s Watercolors
White Cube's New York gallery presents "This Beautiful Light," an exhibition of works by the late Lebanese-American artist Etel Adnan, who died in 2021 at age 96. The show coincides with what would have been her 100th birthday month. Several large-scale tapestries, woven posthumously in France from Adnan's 1960s watercolor designs, form a central component. These include "Mont Rouge" (2022), measuring 128 x 178 cm, and "Autour des Lacs" (2019), which display chromatic turbulence and abstract forms. Also featured are oil paintings of landscapes and sunsets, alongside "Apple Tree" (2021), an 88-tile ceramic mural depicting spring blossoms. Adnan, a painter, poet, and philosopher, taught philosophy at Dominican University of California in the 1960s. The exhibition includes works she envisioned for production just before her death, with tapestries translating her intimate watercolor gestures into grand statements. The show runs until March 1.
