Posthumous Chiara Fumai exhibition opens at Guidocosta Projects in Turin

exhibition · 2026-05-05

A posthumous solo exhibition of Chiara Fumai, who died on August 16, 2017, opens November 4 at Guidocosta Projects in Turin. Titled "Nico Fumai: being remixed," the show revisits the artist's early work on Nico Fumai, a fictional Italian disco singer and her father's name, first presented as a lecture at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in 2010. Fumai's practice involved performative reenactments of historical figures like bearded lady Annie Jones, medium Eusapia Palladino, theosophist Madame Blavatsky, terrorist Ulrike Meinhof, and Valerie Solanas, who shot Andy Warhol in 1968. For this exhibition, she shifted from performance to producing handmade objects and memorabilia, including about thirty pieces: exploded drawings in asymmetric frames, a large installation of LPs and 45s displaying Fumai's discography in an amphitheater-like arrangement, and a book in a vitrine. Gallerist Guido Costa states the show was planned before her death, with no posthumous interventions except a missing wall drawing. The exhibition is described as "beautiful, sunny, and very modern," revealing a joyful, almost childlike side of the artist.
