Poster House, New York's First Museum Dedicated to Posters, Opens June 20

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Poster House, a new museum in New York dedicated to posters, will open on June 20, 2019, with two inaugural exhibitions: 'Alphonse Mucha: Art Nouveau / Nouvelle Femme' and 'Designing Through the Wall: Cyan in the 1990s.' Located at 119 W. 23rd Street in Chelsea, the 1,400-square-meter space was designed by LTL Architects and occupies the former site of Tekserve, an Apple Store precursor that closed in 2016. The museum includes two exhibition areas, a café, a children's area, climate-controlled storage, an educational lab, a gift shop, and offices. The ground-floor exhibition space, over 200 square meters, features a 2-meter-wide pivot wall that can divide or open the area. Before the official opening, Poster House hosted a pop-up show, 'Gone Tomorrow,' featuring posters from defunct New York cultural institutions and businesses. Director Julia Knight stated, 'We look forward to exploring the world through posters, which have always privileged direct communication with the public through the beauty of design.' Poster House joins a trend of thematic museums in New York, such as Spyscape, the Museum of Selfie, the Ice Cream Museum, the Museum of Candy, MoPi – Museum of Pizza, and Color Factory.
