Poster collection traces 1,600 years of Venice history
A Venetian artistic-literary partnership celebrates the 1,600th anniversary of the Republic of Venice with a poster series titled Linea 1. Illustrations by Lucio Schiavon and texts by Alberto Toso Fei depict key figures and symbols from the city's past, from Attila to the Kingdom of Italy. The project, conceived by Giovanna Zabotti and Lucia De Manincor, takes its name from the vaporetto line 1 route. Each poster includes QR codes linking to historical narratives. The first eight posters cover origins to the 15th century and feature Attila, Caterina Corner, the Crusades, Enrico Dandolo, Marco Polo, Maria Argyropoulania, Piero Querini, and San Marco. They are sold as hand-printed serigraphs at Fallani Venezia. The next eight posters, to be released in July, will extend the story to the 20th century. The initiative launched around April 25, the feast of San Marco, part of the city's 2021 anniversary celebrations. Zabotti is curator of the Venice Pavilion at the Architecture Biennale and artistic director of Fondaco Italia; Schiavon has worked with La Biennale di Venezia and Agenzia Armando Testa, and won the International Motion Art Award in New York and the Interfilm Festival Short Movie in Berlin 2015. The project aims to be replicated in other art cities.
