Post-Yugoslav Artists Revive Socialist Solidarity Through Feminist Artworks

publication · 2026-04-19

In her article dated November 30, 2022, Biljana Purić investigates how modern artists from the former Yugoslav regions challenge neoliberal capitalism by reviving socialist legacies. The piece highlights three significant works: 'Ironworks ABC' (2015) by Rena Rädle and Vladan Jeremić, which critiques privatization through sculptures from the Sisak Ironworks; Tanja Ostojić's 'The Lexicon of Tanja Ostojić' (2011-2017), which examines women's labor and migration; and 'Labor of Love' (2014) by Andreja Dugandžić and Adela Jušić, addressing unpaid domestic work in Sarajevo. Citing historical figures like Edvard Kardelj and contemporary thinkers such as Igor Štiks and Srećko Horvat, the article argues that these artistic endeavors promote solidarity against neoliberalism, showcased in cities like Belgrade, Rijeka, Oslo, Tirana, and Sarajevo.
