Possible Tomb of Romulus Discovered in Roman Forum
A significant archaeological discovery has been made at the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo in Rome: a monumental structure believed to be associated with Romulus, the city's legendary founder. The find includes an underground chamber containing a tufa sarcophagus approximately 1.40 meters long, dating to the 6th century BCE, along with a circular element likely an altar. The discovery was announced by Rome's mayor Virginia Raggi on Twitter, who praised the team of scholars. The excavation is part of a campaign at the Curia-Comitium area, where political functions of the Roman constitution once took place. The sarcophagus was carved from Capitoline tufa and was found beneath a staircase built in the 1930s by Alfonso Bartoli. The site aligns with the Lapis Niger, a black stone marking a place of ill omen linked to Romulus's death. The discovery stems from studies initiated a year ago on documentation by archaeologist Giacomo Boni from the early 1900s. Alfonsina Russo, director of the Parco Archeologico del Colosseo, will decide on the site's future valorization. A conference on the topic is scheduled for February 21. However, archaeologist Valentino Nizzo, former director of the Museo Nazionale Etrusco di Villa Giulia, expressed skepticism via Facebook, noting that the same sarcophagus was described by Boni in 1900 and contained materials dating to the 4th century BCE, suggesting possible misinterpretation by the media.
