Pose and Variations: French 19th-Century Sculpture at Gulbenkian Museum
The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon presents 'Pose and Variations', a traveling exhibition uniting around thirty sculptures from the collections of Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian (1869-1955) and Carl Jacobsen (1842-1914). The show explores the theme of the pose in 19th-century French sculpture, featuring works by Edgar Degas and Auguste Rodin. It is organized into five sections: The unposed, Crouching, Nursing, Intertwined, and Standing. The exhibition highlights convergences between the two collectors, both in the artists represented and in the adaptation of poses inspired by classical mythology. After Lisbon, the show travels to Denmark. On view until February 4, 2019.
