Portuguese Gallery Bessa Pereira Opens in Milan with João Louro Solo Show

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Portuguese gallery Bessa Pereira opens its first international outpost in Milan on October 19, 2023, with a solo exhibition by conceptual artist João Louro titled "La teoria dell’evoluzione." The gallery, celebrating its tenth anniversary, chose the Tortona district—an area more associated with fashion and design than contemporary art—for its new space at Via Tortona 30. The exhibition, curated by Mario Codognato (director of the Anish Kapoor Foundation in Venice and former artistic director of MADRE Museum in Naples), marks Louro's return to Italy after representing Portugal at the 2015 Venice Biennale. Louro, born in Lisbon in 1963, is known for series such as "Blind Images" and "Dead Ends," and describes his works as "strategic devices for critical mediation of reality." The show runs until November 8, 2023. Bessa Pereira Gallery, previously focused on modern design and established artists, now dedicates its Milan space exclusively to contemporary art.
