Portuguese collector Joe Berardo ordered to surrender art for €1bn debt
A court has mandated that Portuguese collector Joe Berardo relinquish a portion of his art collection to address outstanding debts amounting to €1 billion. Nevertheless, the three banks owed may never acquire the artworks, as the collection has been under state custody since 2006. Established over ten years ago, the Fundação de Arte Moderna e Contemporânea—Colecção Berardo showcases around 1,800 pieces from Berardo's private collection. This arrangement included a ten-year option for the government to buy 862 paintings and sculptures for €316 million, based on that era's valuation. In 2010, Exame, a Portuguese magazine, estimated Berardo's wealth at €598 million, ranking him among the nation's richest. The art, featuring works by Jean Miró, Piet Mondrian, Gerhard Richter, and Francis Bacon, will remain at the Centro Cultural de Belém for the time being.
