Portugal's 'Public Without Rhetoric' at Venice Biennale 2018

At the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale, the Portuguese Pavilion, overseen by curators Nuno Brandão Costa and Sérgio Mah, engages with the 'Freespace' theme set forth by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara. Entitled 'Public Without Rhetoric,' the exhibition showcases 12 architectural works created from 2007 onwards, emphasizing the public role of architecture. The featured architects, whose birth years range from 1930 to 1980, have completed projects in Portugal, Italy, and France. The exhibit includes a video installation by four Portuguese artists, along with models, drawings, and photographs for each project. Highlights comprise Álvaro Siza's Naples Metro and João Mendes Ribeiro's Arquipélago Contemporary Arts Centre. Additionally, on May 23, the Lisbon Architecture Triennale was announced, set to occur from October 3 to December 2, 2019, under the theme 'The Poetics of Reason.'
