Portugal's Contemporary Art Scene: Resilience Amid Austerity

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-05

Despite a fragile economy and government austerity, Portugal's contemporary art scene thrives through grassroots initiatives and institutional gems. In Lisbon, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Berardo Collection, and Kunsthalle Lissabon anchor the scene, alongside galleries like Cristina Guerra Contemporary Art, Galeria Pedro Cera, and Galeria Filomena Soares. The LX Factory in Alcântara repurposes post-industrial docks into a creative hub. In Porto, the Serralves Foundation leads. The Alentejo region's Eugénio de Almeida Foundation in Évora opened a contemporary art museum in July 2013, housed in a former Inquisition building. In Elvas, the Museu de Arte Contemporânea, founded by collector António Cachola, showcases emerging Portuguese artists. Aveiro's Museu de Arte Nova celebrates Art Nouveau. Young Portuguese artists, often trained abroad in Berlin or London, return to reinterpret traditions like cork, azulejos, and weaving, as seen in Joana Vasconcelos's work. The government's near-sale of 85 Miró works to fill public coffers was averted. Street art in Lisbon's Santos Design District and Príncipe Real reflects both ironic slogans like "It's not Basel, but it could be" and protests such as "Combate o regime de austeridade." The article, by Serena Vanzaghi, appears in Artribune Magazine #18.
