Portrait of Gedney Howe III Honors Charleston Legal Legend

other · 2026-03-31

The Maniscalco Gallery recently revealed a portrait of Gedney Howe III, the prominent Charleston lawyer who sadly died last year. He was the son of the famous Gedney Howe Jr., often called "Big Gedney" or the "Sage of the South." This portrait was created before his passing and completed with help from his son, Gedney Howe IV. The office's design was done by the late Buzz Harper, known for the Calhoun Mansion. Howe III earned his J.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1973 and worked alongside his father, achieving South Carolina’s largest personal injury verdict. His mother, Marybelle Howe, was a civil rights pioneer who founded health clinics for migrant farmworkers in the 1960s. A bronze bust of Gedney Howe Jr. stands in the courtyard of Charleston's Judicial Center.
