Porto Simpatica: New Artist-Run Space Opens in Rome's Periferia

Porto Simpatica, a new artist-run space in Rome's Portuense district, will officially open in September 2022 after renovations. Founded by ten artists—Federico Arani (b. 1995, Rome), Simone Bacco (b. 1995), Jerico Cabrera Carandang (b. 1992, Rosario, Philippines, moved to Rome at age 10), Ginevra Collini (b. 1996, Rome), Giulia Crivellaro (b. 1995, Bolzano), Vito Gara (b. 1992, Putignano), Andrea Lo Giudice (b. 1994, Rome, winner of the special Fondamenta prize at the 12th Talent Prize by Insideart), Alessandro Matera (b. 1994, Genzano di Roma), Stella Rochetich (b. 1997, Rome), and Bianca D'Ascanio (b. 1997, Rome, currently in residence)—the space occupies a former garage housing their studios. The name combines "Porto" (port/haven) and "Simpatica" (referencing TV fortune-teller Maga Simpatica, whose studio was once on the site). A preview event in March 2022 featured palm reader Enzo Farina reading fortunes from a Ford Festa parked outside. The group plans a project space for exhibitions, meetings, and events, aiming to redefine traditional exhibition formats. Side projects include itinerant, self-funded parties by independent collective Fuochi Allegri, creating a post-club alternative. Porto Simpatica is registered as a cultural association at Via Dei Silvestrini 6, Rome.
