Poppy Jones opens first institutional solo show at Towner Eastbourne

exhibition · 2026-05-17

Poppy Jones, a Sussex-based artist known for her textile works combining photography, lithography, and watercolour, has opened her first institutional solo exhibition, 'Frozen Sun', at Towner Eastbourne, running until 31 May 2026. The show takes its title from Chris Marker's film 'La Jetée'. Jones's practice, which began in 2020 during the pandemic and after the birth of her first child, focuses on domestic subjects like eggs, flowers, and vintage clothing details, often on suede or silk. Her works are framed in sleek aluminium structures, which she describes as providing a 'cold contrast' to the textiles. In spring 2024, she presented 'Solid Objects' at Herald St's two London sites, and a self-titled monograph with Zolo Press sold out in 2025. Earlier this year, she was commissioned by Louise Trotter for Bottega Veneta's A/W 2026 show, creating two works including a close-up of the Intrecciato shirt that became the show's invitation. Jones also features in the group show 'Handpicked: Painting Flowers from 1900 to Today' at Kettle's Yard until 6 September 2026. Her father is former Vanity Fair photographer Dafydd Jones. She cites influences such as Sonia Delaunay's baby quilt and Sally Mann's memoir 'Hold Still'. At Towner, she introduces an extended colour palette and is experimenting with larger pieces and synthetic materials, though she still works from a studio in her parents' garden.
