Poppositions 2018: Bruxelles’ growing fair in photos
Poppositions, the Brussels art fair that started in 2012 as a completely unstructured and unruly event, has evolved into a key reference for collectors and research galleries. Now in its seventh edition, the fair is directed by Nickolaas Johannes Lekkerkerk for the second time. This year, Poppositions moved to a new venue in the city center, Place du Nouveau Marché aux Grains 22-23, and adopted a more conventional fair layout with stands replacing the previous collective exhibition format. Thirty galleries are spread over four floors, with some installation elements reminiscent of the Independent fair, which previously ran parallel to Art Brussels in April but has now shifted to autumn. The growth of Poppositions is attributed to both its team’s skill and external factors: the absence of Independent has drawn its audience seeking experimentation, while Art Brussels’ established commercial profile creates demand for a complementary independent fair. The public program, including lectures, performances, and debates, is also highlighted. The fair runs until April 22.
