cultural-heritage · 2026-05-06

The Vatican has revealed that Pope Leo will commence a week-long visit to Spain from June 6-12, during which he will officially open the central tower of Barcelona's Sagrada Familia basilica. His journey will start in Madrid, where he is scheduled to meet with government officials, parliament members, and King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. Additionally, he will hold a prayer vigil with youth to commemorate Pope Benedict XVI's 2011 World Youth Day. On June 10 in Barcelona, Leo will celebrate Mass and honor the 100th anniversary of architect Antoni Gaudi's passing, as well as inaugurate the Tower of Jesus Christ, which achieved its full height of 172.5 meters in February. He will also visit a migrant reception center in the Canary Islands. Despite the tower's completion, the Sagrada Familia remains unfinished.
