Pompidou Expands with Málaga Pop-Up and New Leadership Under Bernard Blistène

institutional · 2026-04-20

The Centre Pompidou is launching a five-year pop-up museum in Málaga, Spain, scheduled to open in early 2015. This expansion is part of a broader strategy that includes co-commissioned exhibitions globally and major shows at its Paris and Metz locations. Bernard Blistène, a longtime Pompidou curator who organized his first exhibitions there in the early 1980s, has taken over as director, succeeding Alfred Pacquement. Pacquement, who had led the institution since the 1970s, departed last year. Blistène has also directed the museum's annual Nouveau Festival since 2009. Meanwhile, Alain Seban, who became president in 2007 and is now the longest-serving in that role, faces questions about his future direction—whether he will return to politics or remain deeply involved in the art world.
