Pompidou Brussels to Open in Former Citroën Garage
The new Centre Pompidou Brussels will be housed in the former Citroën garage at Place de l'Yser, a monumental functionalist steel-and-glass structure spanning over 16,000 square meters. Designed between 1933 and 1934 by Belgian architects Alexis Dumont and Marcel Van Goethem in collaboration with French architect Jacques Maurice-Ravazé, the building is now recognized for its exceptional architectural value. The cultural project, led by Brussels regional government head Rudi Vervoort and Centre Pompidou president Serge Lasvignes, will combine a modern and contemporary art museum with the CIVA (Centre International pour la Ville, l'Architecture et le Paysage). A pilot exhibition is planned for 2018, with the full opening scheduled for 2020. The museum will feature a selection from the Centre Pompidou's collection of over 120,000 works and will collaborate on new acquisitions and cultural programming. The name of the museum and the architect for the renovation remain undisclosed, to be selected via an open call. Projections estimate over 500,000 annual visitors and the creation of 300 to 600 direct and indirect jobs.
