Pompeii Archaeologists Reconstruct Rare Ceiling Fresco of Dionysus and Ariadne

At Pompeii, archaeologists have successfully reconstructed a unique ceiling fresco illustrating the legendary love story of Dionysus and Ariadne. This fresco, found in the banquet hall of a second-story residence adjacent to a bakery in Regio IX, was lost during the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 C.E. Since 2023, the team has gathered hundreds of plaster fragments. They constructed a curved support that replicates the original vaulted ceiling, enabling them to assemble over a quarter of the fresco from approximately 1,000 pieces. The reconstruction was revealed at an international workshop on July 24, as stated by the Pompeii Archaeological Park. Director Gabriel Zuchtriegel emphasized Italy's prominence in archaeological restoration. Only around 20 ceiling frescoes have been discovered at Pompeii, as most ceilings were made from materials that have since decayed. This site was previously recognized as a "bakery-prison" where enslaved people endured difficult labor conditions. This finding follows last year's discovery of large frescoes featuring female followers of Dionysus in the House of Thiasus, dating back to the first century B.C.E.
