Pompei's New Nursery Revives Ancient Flora with Historical Techniques
On March 14, 2022, for the National Landscape Day, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii previewed its new nursery in the garden of the House of Pansa on Via delle Terme. The nursery will produce rare species of Pompeian flora and ancient plants using techniques from ancient Pompeii, such as ollae pertusae (reproductions of ancient planting pots), willow bindings for rose supports, and river cane balustrades made from excavation data. The project was led by official Paolo Mighetto and garden artist Maurizio Bartolini. Concurrently, a reforestation program is underway for the green areas outside Pompeii's walls, planting over 4,000 trees and shrubs starting from the Bosco di Porta Anfiteatro. The forest will be inspired by sacred natural monuments like the Bosco Sacro di Nemi and Pompeian paintings of sacred landscapes, featuring species like holm oaks, plane trees, tamarisks, elms, and oaks. Sponsored by benefit corporation Arbolia and with contributions from Sa.Gest, a total of 6,000 trees and shrubs will be planted between 2022 and 2024, restoring the park's original splendor.
