Pomezia Launches Public Art Project 'Sol Indiges' with Artists Agostino Iacurci and Ivan

The municipality of Pomezia, near Rome, has launched 'Sol Indiges', a public art project involving international artists Agostino Iacurci and Ivan. Curated by Marcello Smarrelli, the project will see murals painted on three culturally significant buildings: the Biblioteca Comunale Ugo Tognazzi, the Scuola secondaria di primo grado Orazio, and the Scuola secondaria di primo grado Publio Virgilio Marone. The initiative is part of national celebrations for the 700th anniversary of Dante Alighieri's death. Deputy Mayor Simona Morcellini emphasized culture as foundational for community building, while Mayor Adriano Zuccalà highlighted the revitalization of the cityscape through street art shared with local students. The title 'Sol Indiges' refers to an ancient sanctuary dedicated to the sun god at the site where Aeneas landed, near Lavinium. Iacurci's mural draws on the figure of Aeneas, while Ivan's work focuses on the school, using street poetry to update historical memory through Virgil and Dante. Smarrelli described the approach as 'New Muralism', a powerful tool for disseminating contemporary art to diverse audiences through direct communication. He stressed the importance of dialogue among artists, citizens, institutions, and public and private commissioners to create shared cultural heritage.
