Political Artist-Curators Symposium at Whitechapel Gallery

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Ines Doujak and Oliver Ressler presented their research project 'Political Artist-Curators' at the 'Artist as Curator: Collaborative Practices' symposium held at Whitechapel Gallery on 19 April 2013. The project, titled 'DARK ROOM – Critical Artist-Curators', examines self-critical curatorial practices by artists to disrupt traditional sequences of production, presentation, and reception. It will culminate in a participatory public forum at Secession in Vienna from September to November 2014, involving ten international artists or groups who curate exhibitions as part of their artistic activities. Doujak, based in Vienna and London, recently showed her long-term project 'Loomshuttles/Warpaths' in the solo exhibition 'Not Dressed for Conquering' at the Royal College of Art, London (13-21 March 2013). She participated in the Busan Biennale 2012 and 'The Potosí Principle' at Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid (2010). Ressler, an artist and filmmaker in Vienna, produces works on economics, democracy, global warming, and social alternatives. His solo exhibitions include Berkeley Art Museum, Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center, and The Cube Project Space. He participated in biennials in Prague, Seville, Moscow, Taipei, Lyon, and Gyumri, and curated 'A World Where Many Worlds Fit' for the Taipei Biennale 2008. His travelling show 'it's the Political Economy, Stupid', co-curated with Gregory Sholette, is at Pori Art Museum in Finland.
