Polisonum's 'Superimposition' Explores Earworm Phenomenon
The Italian duo Polisonum, composed of Filippo Lilli and Donato Loforese, presents 'Superimposition', a multidisciplinary project funded by Italian Council 2023. The work investigates the concept of earworms—catchy tunes that stick in the mind—by analyzing over 10,000 international chart tracks from 2000 to 2022 for quantity and repetitiveness of motifs. Using custom software, the artists superimposed these melodies into a sonic performance. The project, curated by Francesca Ceccherini and Anastasia Chaguidouline, debuted on April 27, 2024, with a performance at the Sala Grande of Cercle Cité in Luxembourg, where it is on view until June 30, 2024, before entering the permanent collection of MAMbo in Bologna. The performance incorporates wearable garments designed with MARIOS and technical support from Politecnico di Torino, which refract and absorb sound pressure, transforming into protective armor for the ear and body. The work evokes ancient rituals, making the audience part of the experience.
