Polish Mail Art's 1970s Origins Linked to Democratic Opposition Philosophy
Polish mail art emerged in the early 1970s alongside the spread of neo-avant-garde and conceptual art across the region. Andrzej Kostołowski and Jarosław Kozłowski authored the foundational NET manifesto in 1971, advocating for an open, engaged, decentralized network of artistic exchange. This artistic development coincided with political transformations following the December 1970 and March 1968 protests, which inspired theories of self-organization challenging state information monopolies. Philosophers Leszek Kołakowski and Jacek Kuroń proposed 'socialization of the private' as an alternative to state corruption during this period, ideas that paralleled artistic networking efforts. The synchronicity between these philosophical propositions and artistic activities established mechanisms for self-organized networks that operated outside state-controlled spheres. ARTMargins published this analysis in Volume 14, Issue 1 (2025) as part of a special issue examining transnational connections in Central East European art of the 1970s. The article appears alongside other scholarly works exploring regional artistic dialogues, performance art photography, and specific artist groups like Bosch+Bosch. This research contributes to understanding how artistic and intellectual movements intersected with political opposition in Poland during the 1970s.
