Police Investigate TikToker for Secretly Filming Strangers with Meta Smart Glasses

Authorities in Scotland are looking into content creator Scott Margerison, who goes by E Dobbin on TikTok, for allegedly using Meta smart glasses to covertly record individuals, including shop employees and ferry personnel, during a road trip across Scotland. The Independent reported that the footage features Margerison engaging with young women and girls, seemingly unaware they are being filmed, while making comments about their looks, relationship status, and vaccination. One clip captures the bridge of the CalMac ferry Loch Seaforth, which connects Stornoway and Ullapool, leading CalMac to suspend public access to the bridge for a review. Police Scotland has acknowledged receiving complaints and is examining the videos for possible criminal activity. This investigation comes after Instagram banned videos filmed with Meta smart glasses that depict harassment, alongside the shutdown of two prominent pickup artist accounts. While TikTok asserts that its policies already prohibit harassment, numerous similar videos continue to exist on the platform. Concerns over privacy have been raised regarding Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses, while Apple is reportedly focusing on privacy features for its forthcoming smart glasses, which may not include recording functions. This situation underscores the escalating conflict between wearable technology and public privacy.
