Poldi Pezzoli and Louvre Join Forces for Andrea Solario Exhibition
The Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Milan, in collaboration with the Louvre in Paris, will mount a major exhibition on Andrea Solario (1470–1524) in spring 2025, marking the 500th anniversary of the artist's death. Solario, a Milanese painter of the Leonardesque school, trained in Milan and Venice, where he absorbed influences from Leonardo da Vinci, Giovanni Bellini, Albrecht Dürer, and Antonello da Messina. He later worked in France for Cardinal George d'Amboise at the Château de Gaillon. The show will bring together 25 masterpieces from Italian and international collections, including the Louvre, the National Gallery in London, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Key loans include the Louvre's recently restored 'Madonna of the Green Cushion' and the Poldi Pezzoli's 'Rest on the Flight into Egypt', which underwent new diagnostic studies. The exhibition aims to reintroduce Solario to the public and highlight his fusion of Lombard, Venetian, and Flemish traditions. Works already visible in Milan include 'Madonna of the Carnations' and 'Holy Family with Saints Joseph and Simeon' at the Pinacoteca di Brera, and a portrait of a lady at the Castello Sforzesco.
