Poetry Apps Bring Verse to Mobile Devices

digital · 2026-05-05

Three iOS apps aim to make poetry creation accessible on smartphones. Portapoet.com offers a free app with in-app purchases for advanced features, including a rhyme dictionary, poem sharing, user voting, and collaborative rap. It also generates haikus for Twitter. Poetry Creator Verses by Tiny Mobile uses a fridge magnet interface, allowing users to purchase themed word dictionaries (old school, neologisms, 1960s, hip hop, Shakespeare, sci-fi, philosophy) and score their creations. Vniverse, by Stephanie Strickland with Ian Hatcher and Cynthia Lawson Jaramillo, is based on free-association poetry forming imaginary constellations. It originated from a 2002 web app by Jaramillo and connects to Strickland's book V: WaveTercets / Losing L'una (2014). The app reflects on Ice Age nomadic cultures, their migration paths, and pictographic representations. All apps are English-only.
