Podcast commemorates Lisetta Carmi one year after her death

other · 2026-04-27

A podcast has been released to commemorate photographer and pianist Lisetta Carmi, one year after her death on July 5, 2022. Born in Genoa on February 15, 1924, into a Jewish family, Carmi was forced to leave school due to racial laws in 1938. She studied piano privately and became a talented concert pianist, performing in Germany, Israel, and other countries. In the early 1960s, she turned to photography, beginning with a trip to Puglia with musicologist Leo Levi to document the songs of the Jewish community in San Nicandro Garganico, using her first camera, an Agfa Silette. Over twenty years, she produced important reportages in Genoa, including workers at the port, the alleyways, and her most famous works on transvestites and poet Ezra Pound, as well as a report on natural childbirth at the Galliera hospital. She also traveled extensively, creating photographic series in Afghanistan, India, Nepal, and South America. After photography, she returned to music, embarked on a spiritual journey, and founded the Bhole Baba ashram in Cisternino at Babaji's invitation, living a simple life in Puglia. The podcast features an interview with filmmaker Daniele Segre, who directed the film "Lisetta Carmi. Un'anima in cammino," highlighting her genius, personality, and freedom.
