Podbielski Contemporary Opens in Milan with Focus on Political Photography
Podbielski Contemporary, a new photography gallery founded by Pierre André Podbielski, has opened in Milan. After a decade as co-director of Galleria Rubin in Milan and a period of experimentation at its Berlin location, Podbielski moved the gallery to Milan, which he calls the most fascinating city in Europe. The gallery focuses on artists who analyze political and geopolitical issues, particularly in the Middle East, Israel, Germany, the Balkans, Iran, India, Libya, Syria, and Italy. The inaugural exhibition, 'Levante,' features works by Massimiliano Gatti (born 1981 in Pavia), curated by Maud Greppi. Gatti's photographs document war devastation and cultural memory, based on his archaeological expeditions in Syria (Qatna, 2008-2011) and Iraqi Kurdistan (since 2012, with the PARTeN project of the University of Udine). The exhibition runs until May 17, 2019, at Via Vincenzo Monti 12, Milan. Podbielski cited a quote by Alfredo Jaar from 'Conversations in Chile' as inspiration: 'It may sound trivial, but I believe that in the face of all failures, the world of art and culture is the only one that can do something.'
