Playrise modular playgrounds bring play as a right to refugee children

architecture-design · 2026-04-28

Playrise is a UK charity founded by Alexander and Ariana Mouyiaris Meininger and Hikaru Nissanke, focused on building modular play spaces for displaced children. Currently, UNICEF and UNHCR highlight that 48 million children are uprooted, making up 52% of all displaced people. Aysaita refugee camp in Ethiopia, home to over 10,000 children, lacks any playgrounds. The London-based architecture firm OMMX, co-led by Nissanke, designed a timber modular system that can be assembled without special tools and adapted into different configurations like playgrounds or safe areas. Supported by CatalyticAction, founded by Joana Dabaj and Ricardo Conti, Playrise advocates for play as a basic right, drawing from their experiences in various communities.
