Plastic installation by Pablo Dilet tours Egadi Islands to raise environmental awareness

Pablo Dilet, pseudonym of journalist Dario La Rosa (Palermo, 1980), created a site-specific environmental installation titled 'Plastic' across the Egadi Islands. The work consists of seven metal letters spelling P-L-A-S-T-I-C, filled with plastic waste collected from local beaches and seas by Dilet and over one hundred children from the three islands of Favignana, Marettimo, and Levanzo. The tour schedule: July 15 in Favignana, August 13 in Marettimo, August 20 in Levanzo. The project was promoted by the Area Protetta Isole Egadi in collaboration with the Municipality of Favignana. Dilet, known for his environmental focus on Sicily, led volunteers in cleaning the sea of plastic. The installation cages the collected plastic as a warning and example of civic responsibility. Children also contributed bottle caps from home, forming an industrial patchwork. Stefano Donati, director of AMAP, stated that plastic is becoming the most prevalent element in oceans, forming floating islands, covering beaches, depositing on seabeds, entering the food chain, and killing thousands of organisms. He emphasized that proper waste management, reduction of packaging, and reduced use of plastic materials worldwide are necessary to stop this lethal transformation of the seas.
