Pittsburgh's gallery scene gains momentum as Carnegie International returns
As the Carnegie International opens its largest edition with 61 artists, Pittsburgh's commercial galleries are seizing the spotlight. The city's art ecosystem, long supported by Gilded Age philanthropy and institutions like the Andy Warhol Museum and Carnegie Mellon University, has historically lacked a robust gallery scene. Since 2020, new galleries have emerged: here gallery (Lexi Bishop, closed 2023), Romance (Margaret Kross, 2023), and april april (Patrick Bova and Lucas Regazzi, relocated from Brooklyn in 2024). Established galleries like Concept (founded 1972 by Mel Berkowitz, now led by Sam Berkowitz and Alison Oehler) and Zynka (Jeff Jarzynka) welcome newcomers. Romance's current show explores Betty Rockwell's 1940s gallery Outlines. At Independent New York, Romance, april april, and the Irving and Aaronel deRoy Gruber Foundation will present Aaronel deRoy Gruber's work. Gallerists cite affordability and community as key advantages. The Carnegie International runs 2 May 2026 to 3 January 2027.
