Pistoletto's Venere degli Stracci returns to Naples after arson

Michelangelo Pistoletto's second monumental version of Venere degli Stracci was re-inaugurated on March 6, 2024, at Piazza Municipio in Naples, following a fire that destroyed the original on July 12, 2023. The artist financed the reconstruction and donated the work to the city. Funds raised by the association Altra Napoli through the crowdfunding campaign 'Ricostruiamola!' were allocated to two local organizations: Associazione La Scintilla and Cooperativa Sociale Lazzarelle. Students from the master's program in Art, Valorization and Market at IULM University in Milan interviewed Neapolitan citizens and art professionals about the work's impact. Many respondents agreed that the Venus cannot yet become a symbol of Naples, though a minority see it as representing rebirth and resilience. Vincenzo Trione, advisor to the mayor and curator of Napoli Contemporanea, noted that the work 'interrogates and does not leave us indifferent,' and that it rests on the ground, not a pedestal, emphasizing its public engagement. The piece is seen as a catalyst for discussions on public art's role in addressing contemporary contradictions between beauty and consumerism.
