Pistoletto calls for release of man who burned his 'Venere degli Stracci'

Michelangelo Pistoletto has joined calls for the release of Simone Isaia, the 32-year-old homeless man accused of setting fire to his installation 'Venere degli Stracci' in Piazza Municipio, Naples, on July 12, 2023. In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Pistoletto stated that Isaia needs care, not prison, and that his act reveals a societal sickness that art can help heal. Don Franco Esposito of the Liberi di Volare shelter offered to host Isaia for rehabilitation. Lawyer Gabriella Di Nardo filed a release request. Journalist Ciro Pellegrino and publisher Iod Edizioni started a petition for Isaia's release, noting he is a first-time offender held in overcrowded Poggioreale prison. The Review Court confirmed his detention.
