Pistoletto and Lee Ufan in Unprecedented Dialogue at Lee Ufan Arles Through October 2025
An unexpected artistic conversation unfolds at the Lee Ufan Arles foundation, where Michelangelo Pistoletto and Lee Ufan meet for the first time in the exhibition 'A Conversation Piece, Michelangelo Pistoletto and Lee Ufan en dialogue'. Curated by Erik Verhagen, this presentation brings together two major figures from distinct post-war movements: Italian Arte Povera and Korean Mono-ha. Pistoletto, born in 1933, contributes works including his iconic mirrors that reflect viewers, a 1961 self-portrait on stainless steel, and his 1966 'Metrocubo d'Infinito'. Lee Ufan, born in 1936, presents his characteristically minimal compositions, such as silent stones placed on the floor. The exhibition, installed in the Hôtel Vernon, continues until October 5, 2025. Both artists challenge autonomous, self-reflexive art, focusing instead on themes of infinity and the viewer's role. Pistoletto's work often invites spectator participation, a principle realized through performances and his founding of Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto in Biella. Lee Ufan, in a 2019 lecture at the Centre Pompidou, described the unfinished quality in art as an opening for the audience. The dialogue highlights surprising proximities in their humanist and intellectual horizons, connecting two art historical currents previously considered distant.
