Pistoia's 20th-Century Art in the Caript Collection

exhibition · 2026-05-04

In Pistoia, the Fondazione Caript showcases a collection that emphasizes the city's pivotal contribution to Italian art in the 20th century, producing artists of European significance. Marino Marini stands out as a prominent sculptor, while earlier, Andrea Lippi created a symbolist style influenced by African art and Cubism before his death in WWI in 1916. Mario Nannini, a self-taught artist respected by Emilio Notte and Ardengo Soffici, was Pistoia's only Futurist, combining Cubism and Futurism in depictions of rural landscapes until he succumbed to the 1918 flu pandemic. The 'Cenacolo' group emerged in the 1920s, featuring Renzo Agostini, Pietro Bugiani, and others, who revived figurative art with influences from Cézanne and De Vlaminck, inspired by Lanza del Vasto's poetry. Following the group's disbandment, artists like Bugiani and Mariotti continued to develop under Soffici and Carlo Carrà, while Francesco Chiappelli's etchings, 'Sguerguenze,' critiqued bourgeois morals in a style reminiscent of Goya. This collection was part of the 2019 exhibition 'Pistoia Novecento. 1900-1945' at Fondazione Pistoia Musei.
