Pistoia Exhibition Celebrates Photographer Aurelio Amendola's Portraits of Artists

The city of Pistoia dedicates a comprehensive exhibition to Aurelio Amendola (born 1938), a master of analog photography known for his humanist approach to portraiture. Over the past half-century, Amendola has photographed a vast swath of the art world, including Giorgio de Chirico, Roy Lichtenstein, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Andy Warhol, Marino Marini, Giacomo Manzù, Mario Ceroli, and Jannis Kounellis. His portraits capture intimate, everyday moments, revealing the human essence behind fame. The exhibition also highlights his sculptural photography, ranging from ancient works by Giovanni Pisano and Jacopo della Quercia to Renaissance masterpieces by Michelangelo, and contemporary sculptures by Marino Marini and Antonio Canova. Amendola's ability to render the monumentality of Michelangelo's marble and the delicate sensuality of Canova's figures is showcased. Additionally, the show explores his deep connection to his hometown of Pistoia, where he captures the soul of its monuments, as well as other iconic Italian sites like Matera, San Galgano, Gibellina, St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, and Milan's Duomo. The exhibition runs in Pistoia, curated by Niccolò Lucarelli.
