Pisanello's Restored Mural Cycle Unveiled in Mantua

exhibition · 2026-04-27

A major exhibition titled 'Pisanello. Il tumulto del mondo' opens at Palazzo Ducale in Mantua, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the rediscovery of Pisanello's monumental mural cycle. The frescoes, executed around 1430 for the Gonzaga lords, were uncovered in the 1960s by superintendent Giovanni Paccagnini and restored after decades of work. The show features the newly re-installed Salone del Pisanello with improved lighting and a raised bamboo platform designed by Eduardo Souto de Moura and the Politecnico di Milano. It also includes sinopie, drawings, medals, and loans such as the 'Madonna della Quaglia' from Museo di Castelvecchio, Verona, and 'Madonna with Child and Saints Anthony and George' from the National Gallery, London, back in Italy for the first time since 1862.
