Pippo Rizzo Retrospective at Villa Zito Explores Sicilian Futurism
A major retrospective titled 'Pippo Rizzo: Dialoghi futuristi' has opened at Villa Zito in Palermo, the headquarters of the Pinacoteca della Fondazione Sicilia. The exhibition traces the trajectory of Sicilian artist Pippo Rizzo (Corleone, 1897 – Palermo, 1964) from his pivotal stay in Rome (1919–1921) through the late 1920s, highlighting his role as a key figure in the 'Secondo Futurismo' movement. Curated by Giulia Gueci and Sergio Troisi, the show features over seventy works including paintings, drawings, applied art objects, furniture, and documents. It draws inspiration from Balla and Depero's 'Ricostruzione futurista dell'universo,' which advocated for a total art encompassing design, fashion, cinema, theater, music, dance, and food. Notable pieces include the 'Salottino futurista' (1927), recently shown at Fondazione Prada Milan's 'Post Zang Tumb Tuuum' exhibition, and 'Lo Schermidore Salafia' (1928), returning to Sicily after nearly ninety years. The exhibition also presents archival materials from the Archivio Pippo Rizzo in Palermo and the Archivio del '900 at Mart.
