Pipilotti Rist: The Video Art Pioneer Who Made the Genre Mainstream
Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist (born 1962) has been a pioneering force in video art and experimental installation since the 1980s, with a focus on the female body and pleasure. Her work, often intimate and surreal, has sparked controversy, such as at the 2005 Venice Biennale where her video 'Homo Sapiens Sapiens' in the church of San Stae featured nudity and explicit sexual imagery, leading to early closure after a petition reached the Pope. In 1992, she attempted a feminist porn with 'Pickelporno', using a tiny camera to explore bodies from within. Her first video, 'I'm Not the Girl Who Misses Much' (1986), made during her first year at art high school, became a cult feminist piece. She signed with Luhring Augustine soon after. Rist's influence extends to music: Beyoncé's 'Hold Up' (2016) video was seen as an homage to Rist's 'Ever Is Over All' (1997). Her immersive installations, like 'Pour Your Body Out' at MoMA, featured menstrual blood and drew criticism for making viewers passive. Public works include a square in St. Gallen, Switzerland, with architect Carlos Martinez, and a ceiling screen at Das Loft in Vienna. Rist, who slowed down after contracting hepatitis C, continues to challenge rectangular screens, moralizing dogmas, and anti-feminine bias against bright colors.
