Pipilotti Rist's Heroes of Birth at Luhring Augustine offers immersive yet diluted experience

The exhibition Heroes of Birth by Pipilotti Rist took place from September 11 to October 16, 2010, at the Luhring Augustine Gallery in New York City. This immersive showcase included All or Nothing (alles oder nichts) (2010), featuring a three-part video screen in an altar-like setup, along with Layers Mama Layers (2010), which displayed videos of sheep through delicate sheets. In the back gallery, guests encountered wallpaper adorned with human kaleidoscope designs and Massachusetts Chandelier (2010), a sculpture made of illuminated underwear. While addressing themes of childhood, gender, and sexuality, critics noted that it fell short compared to Rist's 2009 MoMA work, Pour Your Body Out (7354 Cubic Meters), which Jerry Saltz deemed transformative yet lacking in depth in Heroes of Birth.
