PIPA Prize 2021 Awards Five Artists, Shifts to Digital Format and Multiple Winners
The 12th edition of Brazil's PIPA Prize selected five winners: Castiel Vitorino Brasileiro, Denilson Baniwa, Ilê Sartuzi, Marcela Bonfim, and Ventura Profana. This marks a permanent shift from a single winner to multiple recipients, aiming to reflect Brazil's plural artistic landscape and reduce competitiveness. Each winner receives R$10,000 without requiring a work donation to the PIPA Institute. The prize also ends in-person exhibitions for winners, moving to a digital occupation from September to October 2021, where each artist will occupy the PIPA website and social media for a week with original work. The 2020 winners' works will be shown in a physical exhibition at Paço Imperial in Rio de Janeiro from September 9 to November 20, alongside recent acquisitions. The PIPA Online category, decided by public vote, awarded Daiara Tukano and Ruth Albernaz. Curator Luiz Camillo Osorio explained the changes aim to strengthen the institution and develop other curatorial projects. The 2021 selection highlights experimental poetics blending performance, new technologies, ancestry, and politics. A bilingual catalogue will feature all winners and 58 nominees.
