Pioneering Women Who Revolutionized Kitchen Design
The Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas in Madrid presents 'Las ingenieras domésticas y la revolución de la cocina', an exhibition examining how design transformed the kitchen into a modern innovation laboratory. Curated by Andrés Alfaro and Remedios Samper, the show features nearly 200 objects from the Colección Alfaro Hofmann in Godella (Valencia), one of Europe's premier collections of 20th-century domestic design with over 5,000 pieces. The exhibition includes graphic documentation and historical kitchen recreations tracing the evolution of domestic space from the late 19th to early 20th century. It highlights research by theorists, architects, and designers such as Catharine Beecher, Christine Frederick, and Lillian Gilbreth, who introduced ideas of efficiency and task rationalization. European architects like Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, Erna Meyer, Benita Koch-Otte, and Truus Schröder developed innovative proposals that gave the kitchen unprecedented architectural, social, and functional dimensions, dignifying domestic work and improving women's social status. Many spatial and organizational solutions from that era—functionality, workflow optimization, integrated storage, ergonomics—remain present in contemporary kitchens. The exhibition runs until September 27.
