Pioneering Italian choreographer Lucia Latour dies at 79

Lucia Latour, a pioneering figure in Italian contemporary dance, died on April 13, 2019, in Rome after a long illness. Born in Rome in 1940, she studied dance at the Accademia Nazionale di Danza and architecture at the University of Rome. She gained international attention for her avant-garde work exploring the relationship between body, space, and technology. In 1986 she founded the company ALTROTEATRO, which became ALTROEQUIPE in 2002. Key works include Anihccam (1989), Marmo Asiatico (1993), Metopa sud-Planktai (1994), Ultramarine (1995), Straballata (1997) with musician Alvin Curran, Du vu du non vu (1998), Šansa (1999), and Physico (2001) with architect Orazio Carpenzano. In 1992 she co-signed the Manifesto della danza come arte contemporanea with Virgilio Sieni, Efesto, Giorgio Rossi, Enzo Cosimi, and Massimo Moricone. Her last work, Lallunahalone, was from 2008. She taught at the Accademia Nazionale di Danza, Accademia Silvio D'Amico, Sapienza University, and the Liceo Artistico di via Ripetta. A private funeral was held on April 20 at her home with her husband, artist Achille Perilli. Many colleagues and dancers paid tribute, highlighting her rigorous, experimental approach and her influence on generations of dancers.
