Pinuccio Sciola Digital Archive Launches in Sardinia

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

A decade after his death, the Fondazione Pinuccio Sciola has launched a digital archive for the Sardinian sculptor Giuseppe Sciola, known as Pinuccio. Born in San Sperate in 1942, Sciola transformed his hometown into a "Paese Museo" (Museum Village), pioneering public and environmental art in Italy. His work, deeply tied to nature and material, culminated in the "Pietre Sonore" (Sounding Stones) and the Giardino Sonoro (Sound Garden) in San Sperate, where sculpture becomes sound. The archive digitizes documents, images, projects, and materials, including exhibition documentation, press reviews, a bibliography, and a catalog of his entire sculptural production. A key feature is the series "I luoghi di Sciola" (Sciola's Places), which collects over 400 projects—both realized and unrealized—across national and international contexts, comprising manuscripts, sketches, and study materials. The foundation, established in 2016 by his children Chiara, Tomaso, and Maria, aims to preserve and promote Sciola's cultural legacy. Maria Sciola explained that the project began with organizing physical papers before digitalization, requiring a "mental reordering" before a digital one. The archive is designed to support research, historical and critical study, and the valorization of a growing heritage.
